Assists individuals with disabilities to achieve greater independence by providing advocacy, independent living skills instruction for people of all ages, a nursing home transition financing program, specialized information and referral, assistive technology equipment loans, life skills education for youth, general recreational activities/sports, and peer counseling.

Description:

Local nonprofit, non-residential agency that assists persons with disabilities to achieve greater independence by providing services and activities that enhance independent living skills. It also promotes the public’s understanding, accommodation, and acceptance of their rights, needs, and abilities through public awareness efforts.

Eligibility:
A person must have a physical or mental disability that impairs activities of daily living and a reasonable expectation must exist that UILC's services will increase independence.

Description:

Supports individual and community advocacy strategies that create positive change for persons with disabilities and their environment at a local and state level. Provides direct advocacy for individuals at the community level providing them with skills to help them successfully integrate into their communities and teaches individuals with disabilities self-advocacy skills.

Provides skills training to enhance the independence of adults with disabilities by offering classes in cooking, assertiveness, relationships, financial management, adjustment to disability, and others. Adults with disabilities can also get help finding accessible housing, receive peer support, and work individually with staff.

The program identifies the needs of participants, helping them make the transition and connects them to appropriate agencies and support systems in the community.

Provides a peer/mentor support program to people with disabilities. People with similar disabilities provide skills training activities like using public transportation, budgeting, and resource navigation. The peer support specialist also assists in completing applications for services like housing.

Description:

A program specifically for youth 14 - 22 that teaches life and employment-related skills. Provides employment skills training, including identifying job skills, creating resumes, interviewing skills, and maintaining a job. Topics covered include money and time management, dating, shopping, community safety, general hygiene, and how to utilize public transportation. These skills are taught on location in high school classrooms and post-high school classrooms.

This program provides people with disabilities the chance to engage in recreational and leisure activities within their community. It offers outings to group activities and events allowing people with disabilities to interact with others and discover the community resources available.

Description:

Loans assistive equipment to those with a temporary need. Equipment can be loaned out for 3 months with the option to renew the loan if required. Borrowers assume responsibility for the upkeep of all loan equipment. This includes mobility assitive equipment.
